Recently a large number of our pupils took part in a Christmas card design competition for NIPANC which is the only Northern Ireland based charity working to improve the outcomes of pancreatic cancer for patients and families here.
This follows on from some of our current Year 10 pupils who were involved in last year’s sand art video produced by NIPANC on the theme of “time matters”. The video produced with our pupils on Downhill beach has now been seen in over 80 countries and we were delighted again this year to be able to involve our pupils in helping with this most vital charity.
The designs were reviewed by a judging panel led by Belfast artist AJ Laird, who was very impressed with the thought and time put into all the designs. Lots of NI Schools were involved in this year’s competition and three finalists from Dominican College were selected; the overall winner is Eden Russell and the two runners up were Thomas Campbell Year 11 and Laura Romanowska Year 10.
Eden’s winning entry has now been produced as a Christmas card with the Eden’s name and our school printed on the back along with the NIPANC logo. The cards will be available in packs of ten to purchase for £5 and all proceeds will go to NIPANC. Cards can be purchased in school and also at www.nipanc.org.
Susan McLaughlin and Ivan McMinn, both trustees of NIPANC came to school on Friday to announce the special news to Eden and to let her see her card design in print and to present certificates and prizes to all three Dominican pupils for their designs.
Finally, all of the entries have been passed to Ratheane Care Home who will be using them as a display for the residents in the lead up to Christmas.
Miss McConnell, Head of Art explained “This has been a great opportunity for our pupils to showcase their talents and for such a great cause. I am delighted once again to have been able to work with NIPANC and I would like to congratulate Eden, Thomas and Laura on their card designs. It is a joy to see Eden’s design being produced as a commercial Christmas card and to be able to offer them for sale within our school community.
