Dominican College welcomes Bishop Tony Farquhar.
Bishop Farquhar returned to Dominican College on Friday to celebrate our start of year mass and to enjoy a meal in the company of current and past staff and specially invited guests.
In welcoming Bishop Farquhar back to Dominican College, Ms Ronan spoke of his “many years of faith, friendship and fun” throughout his forty year association with the school. She presented him with a gift on behalf of the school in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination.
Bishop Antony (Tony) Farquhar was educated at St Malachy’s College, Belfast before studying Classics at Queen’s University. This period of study, in the company of his contemporary Seamus Heaney, was followed by four years studying Theology at the Pontifical University in Rome. He was ordained in the Basilica of St John Lateran in March 1956.
His first appointments were as a curate in Ardglass and a member of the hospital chaplaincy. From 1966-1970 he taught Classics at St McNissi’s College, Garron Tower, returning to Queen’s as Assistant Chaplain from 1970-1975.
Bishop Tony was first appointed chaplain to the sisters, staff and pupils of Dominican College in 1975 alongside his work as both Chaplain and Lecturer in Religious Education at NUU.
In 1982, aged 42, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor and was ordained a Bishop in 1983 with, as the youngest member of the Bishops’ conference, special responsibility for youth.To view photogallery click on a thumbnail{module_photogallery,33386}
