Mathematics

At Dominican, students of all abilities and aspirations are nurtured, challenged, and inspired. Whether your child is a mathematics enthusiast or needs a little extra support, we are here to ensure every student reaches their full potential in an engaging and supportive environment.

We are proud to offer tailored support for every learner, ensuring all students thrive in mathematics. Our dedicated Numeracy Support Assistant and Team of Maths Mentors, as well as our weekly afterschool Maths Support Club provide personalised guidance to those who need extra help, fostering confidence and mastery. Our commitment to inclusion extends beyond the classroom, with whole-family workshops that invite parents and students to engage in fun, interactive numeracy activities, building skills and confidence together.

We embrace innovative teaching tools to enhance learning. Sparx Maths, an advanced ICT resource, engages, challenges, and inspires our students. This cutting-edge platform supports pupils in developing confidence and proficiency through interactive and personalised learning experiences.

Opportunities for enrichment are abundant. Inspiring visitors, including world-renowned mathematicians, have delivered talks on topics like the “Mathematics of Magic,” while W5’s demonstrations showcase mathematics’ role in world-changing inventions. These experiences broaden students’ horizons and bring the subject to life.

Our students also excel in a variety of competitions, such as the Queen’s University Mathematics Competition, the Bank of Ireland Money Smarts Challenge, and our own Stock Market Challenge, where they simulate buying and selling shares based on real-time news and financial updates. These activities help students apply mathematical skills, develop business awareness, and foster entrepreneurial thinking. Additionally, Mathematical University Lectures allow senior pupils to explore advanced topics, preparing them for the next stage of their education.

The joy of learning extends to everyone through engaging activities like our Maths Fair, where every subject demonstrates its connection to mathematics through hands-on exhibits. Weekly challenges, such as the Problem of the Week, further inspire curiosity and a love for the subject.

At Dominican, mathematics is for everyone. Our teaching fosters confidence, curiosity, and a sense of achievement. Join us in exploring the endless possibilities that mathematics can offer.

KS3

At Key Stage 3, students build a solid foundation in core mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, data handling, and number theory. Emphasis is placed on developing problem-solving skills and logical reasoning. Innovative teaching approaches, including interactive software and group challenges, ensure an engaging learning experience that prepares students for the rigor of GCSE Mathematics.
