Physical Education

Within the Physical Education department, we aim to provide opportunities and experiences through a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. We aim to contribute to the physical, social and mental development of every student. This should appreciate the varied needs of all pupils and prepares them for adult life and which reflects the aims of Dominican College Portstewart.

KS3

In KS3, as stated by the Department of Education, all pupils follow the compulsory Physical Education Curriculum. This includes games ( Football, Netball, Gaelic Football, Camogie, Hockey and Badminton), Gymnastics, Swimming(when available) and Athletics.

GCSE EQUIVALENT:

We offer two options in Sport at Level 2

  • PEARSON BTEC Level 2 FIRST AWARD in SPORT

Year 11 and 12 pupils study the Pearson Specification, and this subject is equivalent to one GCSE. Pupils are awarded grades Distinction * – Pass.

Unit One: CORE

Fitness for Sport & Exercise

This unit is assessed by online external exam. Pupils explore fitness requirements, components of fitness and training methods. Pupils participate in a series of fitness tests.

(25%)

Pupils will take the exam at the end of year 11. Pupils have ONE resit opportunity.

Unit Two: CORE

Practical Performance in Sport

This unit is assessed by teacher assessed tasks. Pupils will develop their knowledge of the regulations, rules, skills & techniques of two sports. Pupils perform and review their own performance. This unit also looks at the roles of officials.

(25%)

Pupils will complete various teacher assessed tasks throughout year 11.

Unit Three: CORE

Training for Personal Fitness

This unit is assessed by teacher assessed tasks. Pupils will design a personal fitness training programme and learn about factors of exercise.

Pupils will complete various teacher assessed tasks throughout year 12.

Unit Six:

Leading Sports Activity

This unit is assessed by teacher assessed tasks. Its focus is sports leadership.  Pupils will plan, organise and deliver a sports session to Year 8 pupils, evaluate the lesson and produce a personal development plan.

Pupils will complete various teacher assessed tasks throughout year 12.

Video evidence is compulsory for units 2 ,3 and 6. Pupils taking BTEC Sport must be regularly competing in a team sport.

  • OCN NI Level 2 Certificate in SPORT

Students studying Sport OCN Level 2 Certificate in Dominican College will follow the OCN Sport Specification. See https://www.ocnni.org.uk/qualifications/ocn-ni-level-2-certificate-in-sport

This course is the equivalent to one GCSE (Grade B).

Pupils complete 16 credits made up of a number of projects (2 modules) over the 2-year course. Pupils complete Unit 1 and then either 2 or 3.

2. Fitness for Sport and Exercise

*Understand the components of skill-related fitness.

*Be able to apply the principles of training in terms of Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type (FITT) and be able to use methods of training for fitness components.

Pupils explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Pupils will take the exam at the end of year 13.

Unit Two: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-Being

A task set and marked by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions.

• In Part A, learners will be given a case study one week before a supervised

assessment period in order to carry out preparation.

• In Part B, the supervised assessment period is 2.5 hours as timetabled by Pearson.

• Written submission.

• 60 marks.

33.5% of overall A- Level

Pupils will take the exam at the end of year 13.

Unit Three: Professional Development in the Sports Industry

This unit is assessed by assignments. Pupils will develop their knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.

16.5% of overall A-Level

Pupils will complete various teacher assessed tasks throughout year 14.

GLH = 60

Unit Five:

Application of Fitness Testing

This unit is assessed by assignments. Pupils will gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness.

16.5% of overall A-Level

Pupils will complete various teacher assessed tasks throughout year 14.

GLH = 60

**Video/Photographic evidence is an essential requirement of unit 3 and 5. **

Career Opportunities

Both Level 2 and Level 3 Sport courses provide an excellent foundation for further study and equip pupils with the managerial, leadership, organisational, decision-making and practical skills which are vital in a wide range of careers in both the public and private sectors.

DCP students who have completed these courses have gone on to further study in:

Sport, Physical Education, Sports Science, Law, Primary Education, Post Primary Education, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Business, Journalism, Nutrition, Dietetics, Marketing, Advertising and Events Management. Three students have gone to study in the USA on scholarships in Athletics, Football and Golf.
